Most Britons in search of a close-to-home cruise head for the
sun and sights of the Mediterranean. But there is a region just
as easily accessible, equally rich in history and culture, and
similarly blessed with sunny weather during the summer months.
Head north instead of south from the UK and you'll find magnificent
cities, tranquil fjords, unforgettable scenery and even some lovely
beaches. And you'll have the added satisfaction of knowing you're
taking a path less travelled , seeing sights and experiencing
cultures still relatively undiscovered.
The three Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, are
often grouped together as the Baltic States, or Baltic Nations.
Although they each are small in territory and population, they
have shown an incredible ability to hold on to their unique languages
and cultures for several thousand years. Latvian and Lithuanian
are related languages within the broad Indo-European language
family. They are considered to be among the oldest living languages
in continuous use. Estonians are not Indo-Europeans. Linguistically,
they are related to the Finns and Hungarians, with whom they make
up the Finno-Ugric language family.
Based around the Baltic sea, Estonia, Latvia and Lituania are
a growing market and will suit holiday makers looking for something
off the beaten track. City breaks will give you time to explore
these ancient cities with the chance to travel further if you
wish. Sweeden, Denmark and Finland are only a ships ride across
the baltic sea.
